Main Purposes of Role

 

• Mosaic works with LGBT+ young persons aged 12 – 18. Mosaic’s main work with young persons is carried out through our Youth Club which meets in Central London. The Youth Club is managed by one of our professional staff supported by a group of volunteer Mentors.
• Youth Mentors will form trusting and professional mentoring relationships with our young persons by being regularly and frequently present at Youth Club. They will also ensure that our young persons socialise in the space and that no one is left out.
• To enable trust to be built up over time the commitment is 40 weekly sessions per year.
• Mentors will take part in service reviews and case work discussions providing the opportunity to develop skills in working with a range of issues that our young persons face.

Key Tasks

 

• Attend the Youth Club at least 40 sessions a year committing to either a Wednesday evening (6pm – 10pm) or Sunday afternoon (12pm – 4pm).
• Guide our young persons as they set up and pack down the space.
• During the social time (the first half of the meeting) socialise with the young persons: catching up, playing games, getting to know one another etc. Ensuring that no young person is left out and that everyone is encouraged to socialise. Keeping the space safe by reminding people of the code of conduct and exemplifying the values.
• Use the social time to build trusting and professional relationships which form the basis of a mentoring relationship.
• Assist with the facilitation of the workshop (the second half of the meeting) as required.
• Take part in the post-Club debrief meeting including discussion of the social and the workshop sessions, review of casework and discussion of particular challenges and problems our young persons are facing with the goal of identifying and being able to offer additional support.
• Youth mentors will be required to adhere to our Volunteers’ Code of Conduct and also to make sure their interactions with each other and with our young persons are compliant with organisations Ethical Principles and other Policies.
• Mosaic will run a DBS check alongside references that would need to be provided prior to starting in the role.

 

Support and Commitment

 

• Training and support will be provided around safeguarding young persons and vulnerable adults.
• Support will be provided to enable you to work effectively with young persons.
• Commitment is at least 40 weekly sessions per year on either a Wednesday evening or a Sunday afternoon.

 

Person Specification

 

• LGBT+ person aged 25+, with an interest in youth work and LGBT+ community engagement
• To ensure our mentors are diverse and reflect the lived experiences of our members, care leavers, asylum seekers / refugees, and those with experiences of insecure housing / houselessness are strongly encouraged to apply
