Pride groups in schools come in various forms. Some welcome allies, while others create a safe space exclusively for LGBT+ students. The purposes of these groups also vary: some campaign for change within the school, run educational workshops for students or staff, or focus internally on discussing topics important for forming a positive LGBT+ identity. Often, it’s a combination of these activities.
Mosaic can assist your school in planning the logistics of a Pride Group. Our mentors can also help facilitate meetings on a semi-regular basis.
Consistency is key in the design of a Pride Group. Holding meetings in the same space at a set time fosters a sense of reliability and sustainability, contributing to the group’s sense of safety. Ideally, the room should be in a discreet location within the school to protect the privacy of those attending.
It is crucial to have a school teacher as a contact person for students who wish to join the group.
There are many other considerations to keep in mind. If you are interested in having Mosaic support your school in setting up or facilitating a Pride Group, please get in touch via email at klara.lievens@mosaictrust.org.uk.
